Notes
- Notes from Gertrude (Topsy)
Her (Topsy) own young life hadn't been easy, with an enforced split-up of the family unit in 1912 following the 1908 murder of her father John Joseph Tilley through being too honest over a game of billiards at the local pub in Jeparit. Her mother had managed to keep the family together for about four years until she was raped by a drunk who was himself immediately killed climbing out the window - almost an act of God! The shock of all this caused Kate to have a nervous breakdown, so the well meaning," local priest and Welfare intervened and the family ceased to exist as a unit.
Notes from David Coggins:
The loss of her husband ultimately broke up the family. Kate understandably suffered financial and mental problems, and having previously lost her hearing, found it difficult to cope with all the children; many of the older children were sent to work in Melbourne. To add to her troubles, Kate was "taken advantage of" in a hotel where she was working (the drunken perpetrator was reportedly killed by a falling window sash) - as a result, Kate gave birth to a daughter Clare on Christmas Eve 1912.
About the end of 1914, Kate had a breakdown and it was decided that the family would be separated. The Roman Catholic social worker and local priest assisted with the placement of the younger children - they were sent to foster homes and convents in Melbourne. Over a period of time during WW1, Kate and older members of the family moved to Railway View at Woy Woy Bay to live with Adelaide (Addie) and help at her guest house. Kate died on 21 August 1950 at Randwick, Sydney - presumably she was living with another member of the family, as Railway View was sold in 1938. - Kate Tilley
