NOTE: Contrary to family stories, on the evidence of his army record W.E Lampard appears to have spent most of his active war service time in New Guinea around Port Moresby in a Transport Company, as a heavy transport driver and a cook. There is no evidence of any direct action against the enemy or of any injuries from any enemy action in his army record.
EULOGY written and read by Elaine Coggins
WILLIAM EDMOND DANNEY LAMPARD
William Lampard (everyone knew him as Bill) was born in the beautiful NSW country town of Bellingen, where his father worked as a Ship's Master on one of the many steamers that travelled on the Bellingen River.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, like so many other young men at the time, Dad joined the Army at the age of 20 years, and did his duty to protect our country.
After the war was over, Dad stayed in the Army for a few years as a cook. He was a good cook, and at home he couldn't make a meal without cooking enough food to "feed an army" - no one went hungry when he was cooking.
After Dad left the Army, he had a variety of jobs. He worked as a Council gardener for a while, then after obtaining his Bronze Medallion in Life Saving he worked as a Lifeguard at the public swimming pool. He suffered health problems as a result of his War service, and retired early.
He fathered nine children altogether - sadly two of them didn't survive for long. He has so many grandchildren it's hard to keep track, as well as many great grandchildren.
Dad lived his life to the fullest - his favourite pastimes were fishing, a game of bowls and his RSL clubs. I spent some years apart from Dad but for the past 15 years he was back in my life, and Mum and I had a lot of great outings and good times with him during those years.
TOGETHERNESS
Death is nothing at all - I have only slipped away, into the next room. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name; speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let it be spoken without effort. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was; there is absolutely unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval somewhere very near just around the corner. All is well. Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before only better, infinitely happier and for ever - we will all be one together with Christ.
And God shall wipe away the tears from their eyes - William Edmond Lampard
