Notes

  • Leo was born 25 August 1897 in Jeparit, Vic. Leo clashed with his father constantly, and as a result received many beatings. He was eager to join the war, signing up with the Light Horse on 8 November 1915 at the age of 18 years and 3 months, and serving as a signaller in Egypt. Leo listed his next-of-kin as his sister Mary Griffiths of St Kilda, Vic, as he claimed his mother's whereabouts was unknown. Later this was changed to his mother's address at Collingwood, Vic. There is a letter on his service file from his mother advising a change of her address from Kensington, Sydney, NSW to Railway View in August 1918.

Leo was not an exemplary soldier; he was fined for bad conduct twice, and was treated twice for Syphilis. When he returned from the war on 29 July 1919 he used some his deferred pay to buy his mother Kate a hearing aid, which was greatly appreciated. Leo was listed as a Striker when he enlisted, and when he was discharged he completed his training as a Compositor. (These printing trades no longer exist.) Leo married Vera in 1929 in Sydney and had four children. He seems to have lived with Topsy at Guildford for a while before he died in 1968 at Parramatta.
